SD Mines takes tough loss to Colorado Mines

RAPID CITY --- Even though the South Dakota School of Mines football team may have lost its home opener to Colorado Mines, 52-24, the Hardrockers still managed to put up some decent numbers and score quite a few points. If not for a couple of costly turnovers, the game could have had a different outcome.

The 'Rockers recorded points from Tyler Barth (on 31 yard pass from quarterback Nick Russell), a two -yard touchdown from Everett Brill, a 33-yard field goal from AFCA All-American Andy Smith (also scored three extra points)and  a one-yard TD run from Russell.

The Hardrockers tallied 316 total yards on a mixture of running and passing. Jamie Dale recorded the most rushing yards for SD Mines with 91, Tony Osthimer recorded the most receiving yards, catching seven passes for 83 yards and Russell ended the night with 222 passing yards and a TD on 24 of 35 attempted.

Defensively, the Hardrockers posted 69 total tackles, had six tackles for a loss of 26 yards, three quarterback sacks for 21 yards, intercepted two passes and had three broken-up passes.

Individually, Brian Kemnitz led the team with 9 tackles, an interception, 1.5 tackles for a loss and a sack. Eric Yeash and Tim Luchini also record sacks in the game and Tom Lunzman was credited with the other interception.

The Hardrocker record now stands at 1-1 and will next begin the Dakota Athletic Conference portion of their schedule. First up is Valley City State Sept. 18 in North Dakota.
