SDM tracksters come up big at Dave Little Invite

SPEARFISH - The South Dakota School of Mines men's and women's indoor track and field teams broke two school records and posted 14 personal-best marks this past Saturday afternoon during the Black Hills State Dave Little Invitational at the Young Center Fieldhouse in Spearfish, S.D.

Hardrocker junior Alexis Godeke established a new SD Mines record in the women's 600-meter run. The Antwerp, Ohio, native took second place in the event at the meet with a time of 1 minute 42.55 seconds. The old record was held by Sondra Landrigan in 1995 with a time of 1:43.90.

The other school record was broken by sophomore Haley Dunn in the women's weight throw. Dunn improved on her own SDM mark, which she set in 2011 by over a foot. She took fifth place at the meet Saturday with a throw of 42-feet-11.75 inches. Her old record was 41-11.25.

Self-improvement was the theme of the day Saturday with a variety of Hardrockers performing better than they had ever in their track careers. Those that earned PR marks included: sophomore Danyka Deno took fifth in the women's 3-kilometer clocking a time of 11:53.78; freshman Brett Bilitz grabbed third place in the men's mile with a time of 4:44.70; running unattached, junior Garrett Shaal earned first place in the men's 600 run posting a mark of 1:24.38; throwing unattached, junior Brian Freed took fourth place in the men's shot put with a distance of 47-7.75.

Also achieving PR marks on the day were: freshman Taylor Heaps in the men's 600 (1:27.00); freshman Hannah Fischer in the women's mile run (7:04.18): Charles Biberg in the men's 3k (10:15.67); freshman Travis Buse in the men's 3k (9:33.65); freshman McKenzie Butcher in the women's weight throw (41-1); Cori Christensen in the women's weight throw (35-11.5); freshman Brandon Carda in the men's weight throw (41-1.5); and freshman Gary Bolinger in the men's weight throw (41-1.25).

A number of other Hardrockers performed well Saturday and were very competitive during the meet. Other Hardrocker highlights included: competing unattached, senior Everett Brill took top honors in the men's weight throw with a mark of 60-1; Freed, also competing unattached, took third in the men's weight thow after a toss of 54-5.25; senior Madisen Lane won the women's high jump after clearing a height of 5-4.5 and junior Lillian Temple was third in the event clearing a height of 5-0.5; junior Kolten Jelden earned second place in the men's pole vault after a vault of 13-11.25 and freshman Sam Hill took fourth after clearing 11-11.75; sophomore Anna Haneline took second in the women's 400 dash (1:02.32); senior Jamie Dale finished fifth in the men's long jump (20-3.50); freshman Sabrina Temple grabbed third in the women's mile (6:10.97); and junior Seth Brotherton, running unattached, finished fourth in the men's 60 high hurdles with a time of 9.01.

Next up the Hardrockers travel to Chadron, N eb., for the Eagle Twilight Indoor Invitational Saturday.
